Transmission electron microscopy is responsible for an assortment of mineralogical discoveries since the 1970s. TEM has helped mineralogists understand asbestiform minerals, modulated crystal structure structures, and gemstone optical effects such as asterism labradorescence. I have used TEM to investigate antigorite polytypes and their relationship to regional metamorphism, and identify asbestiform minerals from ultramafic occurrences in Idaho.
